Abstract

The importance of transportation studies as a sub-discipline of urban geography cannot be understated, and is best understood in its ability to influence society’s interconnectedness throughout history. Urban geographers study transportation in order to better understand the spatial patterns and processes contributing to the movement of commodities and people over time and space. In the urban realm the dominant modes and systems of transportation are continuously evolving, resulting in the necessity to review and update past and current theories and approaches. The objective of this presentation is to establish a historical timeline of urban transportation studies by focusing on the main actors, approaches, debates, and criticisms that contributed to the growth of the sub-discipline.
