Proposal Abstract

It is no secret that today’s students are different: with nearly limitless access to information and a bombardment of instant digital stimulation, understanding the new generation of students is one thing...and teaching them is quite another! In this humorous and practical presentation, take a trip outside of education into the world of design thinking, cross-industry innovation and user-experience. Participants will learn how different industries and services use experience design to create memorable (and some ‘not so memorable’) experiences and discover a learner-centered approach to Generation “Right Now” so that together, we can truly redesign the experience of school.

Statement

Cale Birk is a District Principal of Innovation for the Kamloops-Thompson School District, and is the co-author of Changing Change Using Learner-Centered Design. He works with schools and districts in education as well as with leaders in other service sectors in Canada, the United States, Australia and Asia to re-imagine their communities and workplaces as teams of learners and designers. A former teacher and high school principal, Cale uses the principles of Learner-Centered Design to help leaders model teaching and learning that builds connections throughout their organizations. Cale's latest book, Action Through Questions, will be available in the Spring of 2019 (or earlier, depending on the ski season).
