Abstract

Analyzing Nikkei teenagers’ letters from the Second World War, this paper argues that they represent emotions far beyond the narrow trinity – anger, sadness, stoicism – through which this period of Japanese Canadian history is usually told. This correspondence reveals an emotional everyday that radically reframes prevailing narratives of Nikkei wartime experiences.
