Abstract

In this creative non-fiction essay, I will tell the story of Charles falling in love with her. It’s not a story I anticipated being so hard to tell, but it is a tale of discovery and awareness, a narrative of love and appreciation. Romantic love stories about the complex and intense connection between two people are prevalent in our society. But not all love stories follow that format. Love can blossom as quickly as the wind blows and can be as powerful as a rushing river. It is an intricate emotion which can pose problems when we attempt to think and write about love “beyond people.” This essay uses the love story of Charles and her to explore the topic of untraditional love and, in doing so, attempts to shed light on the influence one dominant narrative form can have on how we express our love for the “more-than-human” world.
