Abstract

She leads him into the dark, and together they dig a hole, depositing a miscellany of memories laced with euphoria and shame. Their goal: to make peace. In this dual-perspective creative nonfiction essay, the narrator and her companion embark on a journey that unravels the connections between biological concepts and everyday encounters with the natural world. Their discoveries allow the narrator to recognize her lack of connection to the natural world and the remedies the “more-than-human” world can provide if she chooses to observe its gifts closely. In particular, unearthing nature emerges as a form of coping with guilt, confusion, and self-acceptance. Ultimately, this piece highlights the prosperity of conscious interaction with nature through the interlacing and bridging of multi-disciplines in order to reveal several greater truths about our lives on this planet. In the beginning the narrator’s thoughts were a daze; her explorations reveal a new path forward.
