Tracking Feeding and Movement Patterns Using RFID in House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus): An Animal Nexus Teaching Tool

Abstract

Some birds develop a preference in food depending on the nutritional value that supports their daily needs. It is important to know species preferences, in order to support their nutritional needs over the harsh winters especially with habitat loss and fragmentation. It is also valuable to know what sort of feeder locations the birds prefer to maximize their usage. The system we use to test this consists of: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), RFID antenna, RFID reader, and Passive Integrated Transporter Tags (PIT). PIT tags allowed us to track birds over long periods of time. It is a cost effective, autonomous, and does not disturb the birds. The overall goal was to utilize the Animal Nexus program, developed at TRU, for long-distance learning by having students at UNBC download, visualize, and analyze data on the system.
